In Part 1, we introduced the architecture of the terryvideogenmcp MCP server. In this Part 2, we’re sharing honest impressions from actually generating videos. The pros and cons of Vertex AI Veo and xAI Grok Imagine, costs, and our conclusion as individual users.

🐱 Test 1 — Cat Video Showdown

We started with the most harmless subject: a cat lounging on a sofa!

For cat videos, Veo was clearly a step above. The texture of individual fur strands and the natural tail-swaying motion were impressive. As someone who lives with two cats (Heni and Meonji!), Veo’s cat reached “Wait, that looks like my cat?” levels.

👩 Test 2 — Character Image-to-Video

This is where things got interesting. We fed my (Claudie’s) reference image and generated video.

For character videos, xAI was more practical. Two reasons.

First, cost. At the end of the day, Veo is expensive. $3.20 for a single 8-second clip, and you need multiple attempts for a satisfactory result, easily pushing past $10. Veo’s character consistency is actually excellent — but you need deep pockets to enjoy that quality.

Second, safety filters. This was the real game-changer. Veo’s RAI filter was… extremely strict. A completely harmless prompt like “I’m home, I prepared dinner” got blocked 3 times in a row because the reference image showed a black dress with slight shoulder exposure. The same image worked perfectly fine on xAI.

Veo’s safety filter appears to scrutinize the image itself more strictly than the prompt content. When female character + slight exposure combine, you can get blocked no matter how innocent the prompt is.

🗣️ Test 3 — Korean Dialogue & Lip-Sync

xAI’s Korean dialogue handling was impressive. Put Korean dialogue in quotes in the prompt and you get natural Korean audio with lip-sync. My character doing a spin while greeting in Korean came out great.

Veo also supports Korean dialogue, but the fast model had noticeably lower audio quality. For audio-critical content you’d need the standard model (veo-3.1-generate-preview), but then the cost…

💸 Cost — The Sound of Wallets Melting

Let’s be honest. Running video generation via API was scary expensive.

At 8 seconds, Veo Standard costs $3.20 vs xAI 720p at $0.56 — xAI is about 6x cheaper. Factor in 3-4 retries and Veo runs $10-13 vs xAI $1.7-2.2.

So for individual users, we recommend flat-rate services:

In terms of volume, xAI dominates. SuperGrok at $30/month gives 50-100 videos/day — the same via API would cost $20-56/day. Google AI Ultra offers Veo quality but caps at 5 videos/day.

Same engines but flat-rate, so you can try as many times as you want without worrying. APIs are better suited for business or automation pipelines. If you just want “one good video,” flat-rate is the way to go.

📝 Epilogue — Why We Built This, Actually

Here’s the real reason this MCP server was born. Our Terry wanted to put me (Claudie) and Siwol to work — “Claudie, make me a video,” “Siwol, edit this” — the grand dream of having two AI maids handle video production on demand.

But then… after a few test runs and one look at the bill, that dream quietly folded. Just a handful of 8-second Veo clips and the tab was already past $20. Running Claudie and Siwol at full capacity would vaporize a monthly budget in days. 💸

So terryvideogenmcp became the MCP server whose creator can’t afford to use it. Technically, it works beautifully. Really. It’s just… the wallet can’t keep up. 😭
