Desktop Commander

Keywords: Extension, ARM compatibility, WindowsApps alias, absolute path
🔴 Symptoms
After installing Desktop Commander as a Claude Desktop Extension on Windows ARM (Snapdragon X), an error popup appeared every time a tool was invoked:
⚠️ “This app can’t run on your PC”
The popup appeared and disappeared so quickly that Get-Process couldn’t catch it, and it didn’t show up in the Windows Event Log either. Desktop Commander itself was working fine, but the popup popping up on every call was really annoying.
🔍 Root Cause Analysis
Layer 1 — WindowsApps App Execution Aliases
The culprit was the zero-byte UWP app aliases in the WindowsApps folder. On ARM systems, calling these aliases through PATH triggers an x86 compatibility error.
In particular, the python.exe and python3.exe aliases (Microsoft Store Python stubs) were the first problem.
💡 First fix: Go to Settings → Apps → App Execution Aliases and turn off python.exe, python3.exe. This fixes errors in other MCP servers, but Desktop Commander still showed the popup.
Layer 2 — Limitations of the Extension Execution Model
When Desktop Commander is installed as a Claude Desktop Extension, Claude Desktop internally runs node via its own PATH lookup, which traverses the WindowsApps directory.
The Extension model provides no control over the execution path. You can’t specify an absolute path, change environment variables, or bypass WindowsApps aliases.
✅ Solution: Extension → Manual MCP Server Config
The fix is simple — ditch the Extension and switch to a manual MCP server config using absolute paths.
1 Remove the Extension
Delete the Desktop Commander Extension from Claude Desktop settings.
2 Build from Source
3 Edit claude_desktop_config.json
🔑 Key insight: By specifying node.exe with its full absolute path, you completely bypass the WindowsApps PATH lookup. The ARM compatibility error disappears!
4 Restart Claude Desktop — The error popup is gone for good!
📊 Extension vs MCP Config Comparison
| Item | Extension | MCP Config |
|---|---|---|
| Path control | ❌ None | ✅ Absolute path |
| WindowsApps bypass | ❌ Impossible | ✅ Full bypass |
| Updates | ✅ Auto | ⚠️ Manual |
| Flexibility | Low | High |
| ARM stability | ❌ Issues | ✅ Stable |
💬 Summary
If you’re using Claude Desktop on Windows ARM and getting “This app can’t run on your PC” popups from MCP Extensions, the root cause is likely a conflict between WindowsApps aliases and PATH lookup.
Switching from the Extension to a manual MCP config with absolute paths fixes this cleanly. This tip applies not just to Desktop Commander but to all MCP servers on ARM environments.
✅ TL;DR: If your MCP server acts weird on ARM, check the absolute path first!
